GF Friendliness

Manageable

Jamaica's naturally gluten-free cuisine — jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, rice and peas, bammy — makes it surprisingly manageable for celiac travelers. All-inclusive resorts like Hyatt Ziva and Jewel Resorts are increasingly accommodating GF guests with marked menus and willing kitchen staff. Outside resorts, awareness of celiac disease is limited, so sticking to naturally GF dishes and communicating clearly with staff is key.

Frequently Asked Questions

You don't need a rental car for a Jamaica resort trip. Ocho Rios and Rose Hall both function as resort corridors, so taxis, resort shuttles, and pre-booked airport transfers cover what you need. Licensed taxis have red license plates, and fares are negotiated in advance since there are no meters. The Knutsford Express coach also runs between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios if you want a cheaper way to cover that route. For excursions off the resort grounds, the concierge can usually arrange transport directly.
Jamaica is manageable for celiac travelers if you lean on resort dining. Naturally gluten-free Jamaican dishes — jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, rice and peas, bammy — make it easier to eat safely, and resorts like Hyatt Ziva and Jewel properties increasingly offer marked GF menus with kitchen staff willing to accommodate requests. Ocho Rios scored 5/10 and Rose Hall 4/10 in my GF friendliness scoring. Outside the resort, celiac awareness is limited, so stick to naturally GF dishes and avoid flour-based items like festival and regular dumplings.
The dry season, roughly November through April, is the best window for a Jamaica trip. That's when I visited, in December, and both Ocho Rios and Rose Hall list that stretch as their best months. Brief tropical showers can still pop up even in the dry season, so pack a light rain jacket regardless of when you go.
