Auckland scores 8/10 on our GF friendliness scale, making it one of the easier cities for celiac travelers. New Zealand has strong awareness of coeliac disease, menus are widely labeled, and there are multiple 100% dedicated gluten-free restaurants in the city.
Top-rated 100% GF restaurants include Giapo (dedicated GF ice cream), HNT Kitchen (GF bowls), The Chip Shop (GF fish & chips), The GF Depot (GF cafe), Little Bird Kitchen (vegan/GF), The Attic Bar & Restaurant (Coeliac NZ accredited), and Olas Arepas (corn-based arepas).
Yes. Pak'nSave, New World, and Countdown/Woolworths all carry dedicated GF sections. Farro specializes in organic and GF products, and The Gluten Free Grocer in Mt Eden is a 100% gluten-free store. Look for the Crossed Grain logo — Coeliac New Zealand's official certification on 300+ products.
Travel Tips
Download the AT Mobile app for real-time bus/train/ferry tracking and AT HOP card top-ups.
Book Hobbiton and Waiheke wine tours at least a week ahead in summer — they sell out fast.
Auckland's UV index is extreme in summer — wear sunscreen even on cloudy days.
The best GF dining is concentrated in the CBD and Ponsonby — plan meals in those areas.
Waiheke Island deserves a full day — don't try to rush it as a half-day trip.
Mudbrick Vineyard has stunning views but book ahead, especially for weekend lunch.
What I'd Do Differently
I'd spend an extra day on Waiheke Island — one day wasn't enough to explore the vineyards and beaches.
I was really looking forward to Mt Eden but never actually made it there — next time for sure!
I'd add a day trip to Rotorua — the geothermal pools and Māori cultural experiences are only a few hours south and I wish I'd made the time.
