Getting Around
Walking
Stavanger center is compact. Cathedral, old town, harbor all within 10 min walk.
Best way to see the city
Kolumbus Buses
Main public transit. City and suburban routes.
Kolumbus app for routes
Ferries
Tau ferry (for Pulpit Rock trailhead, ~40 min). Lysebotn ferry for Kjerag (seasonal).
Check Kolumbus timetable
Flybussen
Airport bus every 20 min to city center (~25 min from Sola airport).
Runs every 20 min
Local Tip
For Pulpit Rock, take the ferry to Tau then seasonal bus to the trailhead. Start early — the hike is 4 hours round trip and the trail gets crowded by midday.

Gamle Stavanger
Historic
Scandinavia’s best-preserved wooden house district. 173 white 18th-century houses along cobblestone streets.
Yes. Meny (Stavanger Sentrum), Coop Mega (Madla), Life health store (Arkaden), and Rema 1000 all carry GF products. Norway has excellent grocery GF availability.
Travel Tips
Pack GF snacks for hiking — there are NO food options on the Pulpit Rock or Kjerag trails
Ferry to Tau runs frequently in summer but check the Kolumbus timetable in shoulder season
Gamle Stavanger is best early morning before cruise ship crowds arrive
Re-naa requires booking well in advance — mention celiac needs when reserving
What I’d Do Differently
I’d allocate a full day each for Pulpit Rock and Kjerag rather than trying to fit both into one trip. They’re both demanding hikes and deserve unhurried time.
