Pro Tip
Celiac disease is not well understood in Sri Lanka. Saying "wheat flour is poisonous" is far more effective than explaining celiac disease. Carry a Sinhala/Tamil translation card. Small family-run places tend to be safer than mid-range tourist restaurants because they cook from scratch.

Travel Tips
Negombo is primarily a transit stop near the airport. If you have a late arrival or early departure, it makes a convenient overnight rather than rushing to Colombo.
The fish market at the Negombo lagoon is worth a quick visit in the morning if you have time before your onward journey. It's one of the biggest on the west coast.
For celiac safety, stick to rice-based dishes: hoppers, string hoppers, and rice and curry are your safest bets. Avoid anything described as "short eats" (often wheat-based pastries).
Confirm your hotel's airport transfer in advance. Many budget hotels near the airport offer free or low-cost pickups.
Download the PickMe app before arrival. It's Sri Lanka's local ride-hailing alternative to Uber and often has better coverage in smaller towns.
What I'd Do Differently
Would have eaten at Lords Restaurant Complex or YAAGA if I'd had more time. The hotel dinner options were limited for GF.
Bring more GF snacks than you think you need. Negombo isn't the place to rely on finding safe food easily.
