Charming 3-star hotel with an on-site Golden LokDown restaurant, free breakfast included, and they even sell ski passes at the front desk. A cozy base with a warm alpine feel.
There were a lot of hotels and restaurants closed during the time of year I went (right before ski season opened), so it was actually really tough to find GF meals. Some of the places that were open seemed to close early too. I ended up eating makeshift meals from the grocery store a couple times, but Zermatt was still one of my absolute favorite cities I’ve ever been to.

Verdict
Zermatt is a challenging destination for celiacs, especially in shoulder season when many restaurants close. Bring GF snack bars, stock up on groceries before arriving, and plan meals around the few restaurants with dedicated GF options. Grampi’s is your safest bet.

Travel Tips
Seasonal warning: Many restaurants and hotels close between hiking season (October) and ski season (December) — check opening dates before visiting in shoulder season.
Grampi’s is the safest GF bet — they’ve had GF pizza and pasta since 2020.
Bring GF bread to fondue restaurants — Du Pont and Old Zermatt will serve fondue with your bread.
The Gornergrat Railway sunset is magical — the Matterhorn turns pink as the sun drops.
Stock up on GF groceries in Visp or Täsch before arriving — Zermatt’s Denner has limited selection.
Despite GF challenges, Zermatt was “one of my absolute favorite cities I’ve ever been to.”
What I’d Do Differently
Visit during peak hiking season (Jul–Sep) or ski season (Dec–Mar) when all restaurants are open and GF options are more plentiful.
Pack even more GF provisions from a bigger Swiss city — I underestimated how limited Zermatt’s grocery options would be.
